Card-Cation

Last week I was inspired to 'go green' for Earth Week. I started to look at everything in my house from a different perspective and constantly asked myself, "How could I use that for my crafts?"

One of the easiest things to 'recycle' for crafting are newspapers and magazines... they are a wealth of 'designer series paper'! For today's quick project I utilized the travel section of our newspaper. They were highlighting a beautiful vacation spot, Costa Rica, and I was instantly inspired. (Not to mention, full of day dreams about sunning myself on the beach, sandy flip flops, and leisurely dinners with my hubby... ya know, the kind where I'm not also shoveling baby food into my darling daughter's mouth whilst also wearing baby food?) The closest I can get at this point though is a Card-cation. ;)

I snipped a few pics from the paper and then zipped them through my Big Shot using the floral die from the Birds and Blooms Sizzlits set. TIP: This is a great idea for scrapbooking... wouldn't it be so cute to do this with pictures? I adhered my blooms to a YoYo Yellow base. TIP: Newspaper is thin and fragile, so take extra care when using your adhesive and be gentle.

The flip flops from the NEW Just Beachy stamp set (part of the Occasions Mini Catalog) were a perfect pairing for this beach themed card. Everything was mounted onto a card base of textured Tangerine Tango measuring 5.5" square. A layer of Tempting Turquoise really makes things pop. My last detail: 3 silver Vintage Brads... because anything shiny is also sassy!

The NEW Just Beachy set is perfect for summer crafts and scrapbooking.

Natural Wonder

Well, since yesterday was Earth Day, I've been in the mood to 'go natural'. Today's long note is an 'organic' creation especially for my hubby... who's not as 'into' all things pink and glittered as I am. ;)

I started by creating my own paper using Kraft cardstock, Chocolate Chip ink, and a rustic floral stamp from the True Friend set. While the images look random, they were actually carefully placed using my Stamp-a-ma-Jig. (SAMJ) If you're good at 'willy-nilly' - go for it, but I choose to rely on my handy tool.

For my centerpiece I zipped a piece of Kiwi Kiss textured cardstock through the Big Shot with the Top Note die. Did you know that the NEW Extended Premium Crease Pad is now available for use with your Bigz XL Dies? Order one today! (117630, $19.95)

I strung my buttons onto Linen Thread and wrapped them around the Top Note. TIP: For accurate placement, I slid the buttons along the string and then slipped a Mini Glue Dot underneath to help them 'stay put'. (On a side note: My husband thinks it's funny that I'm currently going thru. a button obsession... so he'll love that there are SO MANY on HIS card.) I made sure to leave a gap in the middle for an embellishment. I settled on a 'bare' chipboard branch from On Board So Tweet. I loved that it 'matched' the Kraft and that I didn't have to spend any extra time covering it! Everything was mounted onto a base of Chocolate Chip and Pumpkin Pie. (I have this feeling the Pumpkin is controversial. You're either going to love it or hate it -- I'm open for either, but I liked the POP it seemed to give everything.)

Sometimes I end up 'winging it' with design. I had all this 'stuff' on my card and no idea how I was going to squeeze in a sentiment. Everybody breathe - we're going to figure it out! Honestly, something smaller might have worked better, but I was bound and determined to get 'Wonderful husband' on this card! (because my hubby is just that - wonderful!) I used my SAMJ to add the 'Wonderful' and then stamped 'husband' onto Kraft and added it as well. I layered everything onto a Kiwi Kiss base (4" x9.25") and voila, Happy Anniversary, honey!

Where's the sass?

Ohh my friends -- I thought I lost my stampin' sass! I couldn't find it anywhere for days, and the thought of creating made me tired. I also think the fact that my stampin' area looks like a tornado hit it wasn't helping. But, I persevered... sometimes you just have to sit down and stamp!

The inspiration for today's quick card is from Color Throwdown #38 - Baja Breeze, Going Gray, and Ruby Red. (I subbed in Riding Hood Red.) My card base is textured Basic Gray cut to 5.5" square. I topped that with a layer of RHRed and two prints from Parisian Breezes Designer Series Paper. A strip of striped Baja Breeze ribbon hides the seam... I love this 'trick'.

The focal point are 2 butterflies from Great Friend. I stamped our fluttery friend onto textured Very Vanilla cardstock... once in red and once in gray. For their bodies I used silver Vintage Brads. Adding them to a Baja Breeze 'frame' from the Gallery stamp set created emphasis. For a quick background, I used a 3" square of Basic Gray -- my handy Corner Rounder, and 3.2" square matte of Baja Breeze. The sentiment 'for you' was placed out to the side using my trusty Stamp-A-Ma-Jig.

Finally, my sassy somethings: 2 Basic Gray Corduroy Brads with ribbon loops. This card is 'bringin' my sassy back'!

The Three P's

The Three P's:
  1. Pretty Paper
  2. Playful Petals
  3. Paper Piercing
Nothing like a little alliteration to get things going! ;)

Today's thank you card is inspired by Mojo Monday #82. My textured Pink Pirouette card base measures 4.5" x 6". (fits an A6 envelope) I layered a piece of Chocolate Chip card stock complete with a scallop edge onto the pink. Since the sketch shows two layers of scallops along the bottom edge, I also used my punch on a piece of Bella Birds Designer Series Paper. I struggled a bit with how to best line up the scallops and eventually decided to mount my printed paper onto Bordering Blue -- this helped make it less obvious that the alignment is somewhat askew. TIP: When using a border punch it's a good idea to start with your paper edge larger than you intend to use on your card. This way you can trim from each side and be sure you get a full scallop on each end.

I used a coordinating stripe print from Bella Birds to make a 2.75" square. My center pink panel is 2.25" square. For my focal point I chose a bloom from the Playful Petals set and colored it with Stampin' Up! markers in Bordering Blue, So Saffron, and Pretty in Pink. I love that the markers have dual tips because the fine tip comes in handy for small spaces. It seemed a little 'flat' to me, so I stamped the image again and only colored the center portion -- snipping it out and adding it with dimensionals.

I whipped out my Crafter's Tool Kit and used the handy template to create a pierced border around my main square. I also paper pierced along the scallops at the bottom. It was just the right sassy detail. Last, I added my sentiment and a strip of So Saffron ribbon complete with bow. TIP: I adhered a flat strip of ribbon first. Then, I punched 2 holes using my Crop-a-Dile. I threaded another piece of ribbon through and tied it like a shoelace. The ends were frayed a bit so I trimmed for a clean edge... cute and easy!

A Whole Latte Love

My dear friend is at the end of her pregnancy... about to pop and dreaming of holding her sweet boy. I have this feeling that she's also looking forward to a well deserved cup of coffee after abstaining from caffeine for nine long months... and we all know, she's going to need the extra 'boost'. With that yummy 'cuppa joe' in mind (and a Starbucks gift card at the ready), I made today's card.

Have you noticed that Kraft is the NEW must-have item for crafts? It is the perfect neutral and instantly conjures the feeling of something hand made. The layout is based on Splitcoast sketch 223. (SC223) The Designer Series Paper prints are from the Parisian Breezes collection. Talk about a must! Stampin' Up!s specialty papers are divine! My main panel was inspired by this post from Mary Fish at Stampin' Pretty. I just love the idea to use the swirly stems from Simply Said as steam in the Pun Fun latte cup. I shaded the flowers with a blender pen dipped in Baja Breeze and added some cutie buttons. The cup was stamped onto Kiwi Kiss and snipped out. TIP: I used a Hobby Blade to trim out my mug handle. I also used my handy Mat Pack to create a guide for a brad border in my 'margin'. To finish everything up, I isolated the 'love you a latte' sentiment by coloring directly on my stamp with a Chocolate Chip marker then using my Round Tab punch to pop it out. As a final touch, I grabbed one of the eyelets from the Soho Designer Hardware collection and my Crop-a-Dile to add a little something in the corner. TIP: Your hardware should coordinate with the color scheme of your projects. ex: Copper and Brass tones for browns; Silver for grays and blacks.

You'll love it a 'latte'!

Pretty Hat

I remember always being dolled up for Easter and that my ensemble frequently included a hat. Anya, from The Greeting Farm, makes quite a fashion statement in her pretty hat too.

The layout for today's card is based on Mojo Monday sketch #81. What?? It's Friday?! Good thing my stampin' mojo stuck around all week! ;) I combined the sketch challenge with Color Throwdown #37: Cameo Coral, Pink Pirouette, and Sage Shadow.

Sweet Anya was stamped onto watercolor paper and colored using blender pens and ink 'puddles'. (Smoosh your ink pad to create a puddle on the lid and then take your blender pen for a dip.) Her hat and skirt are paper pieced with a print from Walk in the Park Designer Series Paper. Anya's some-bunny special is perfect with Easter coming up.

I love this sentiment from the NEW Great Friend set featured in the Occasions Mini catalog. Who's your best friend that makes good times great?

Today's sassy somethings are: three pretty white buttons from Button Latte -- the perfect dainty touch, and some quick paper piercing I did on the scallops. Hats off to being sassy!

Easter Blessings

My mother would tell you that purple is under-rated... under-used... under-appreciated. When I create cards for those that are near and dear to my heart I try to think about their personality and their everyday preferences. Hence, a purple Easter card for my mother is today's focus.

My card layout is based on CPS Sketch 110. Have you noticed all the ovals being incorporated into things lately? Perfect for my Big Shot Oval Frame. I ran the die through my Big Shot three times... 1) chipboard 2) Perfect Plum Patterns paper 3) Walk in the Park Designer Series paper in a So Saffron print. TIP: Yellow is purple's compliment on the color wheel. To build my base I started with a 5" x 7" piece of Perfect Plum and layered it with Pale Plum and another Plum Patterns print. TIP: Because my frame was more of a solid print, I needed contrast for the background, and chose a print with a white base. I adhered my Oval Frame and nested the cut Saffron oval inside. (i.e. Only the purple portion is mounted on chipboard.)

I stamped the outline image from Soft Summer three times onto watercolor paper and colored my blooms using blender pens and 'puddles' from my ink pads. A So Saffron marker easily shaded the flower's centers. I then snipped everything out (I typically snip while watching TV at night. ;) and arranged them on my base. TIP: It's okay to let things 'escape' off the edges a bit sometimes.

The cross from Special Blessing was inked in Perfect Plum and popped using Stampin' Dimensionals. A sentiment from the Verve set, Everlasting Life, is punched using my Wide Oval Punch and accented with a Sage Shadow scalloped oval background. A final sassy something completes this elegant card: small pearl stickers accent the Oval Frame adding just the right amount of tasteful 'bling'.

Train-tastic

All Aboard for some fun projects that are perfect for the kiddos in your life. Whether you're a mom, grandma, aunt, sister, etc... you're likely to have a special child in your life that would love one of these train themed projects. The NEW Choo Choo stamp set and Right on Track wheel are perfect for everyday cards and scrapbooking. I want to showcase them today as a great opportunity to create birthday party treats.

I love the new Choo Choo set, but needed some coordinating sentiments. I created eight sentiments on my computer that are perfectly sized for use with the Wide Oval Punch. And of course, I'll share them with you.... simply e-mail me a request, and I'll send them on down the line. These simple sayings are sure to keep your projects Right on Track.

I wanted to stick to a classic color scheme using primary colors. My All Aboard invitation is a 6.25" x 4.5" base of Real Red. (fits an A6 envelope) I ran the Right on Track wheel across the bottom of my Kraft layer. TIP: Lay your Kraft on scratch paper (I use SU grid paper) leaving room on each side. When you roll, follow the bottom edge. Start rolling on the scratch paper and up onto your Kraft -- this helps get the ink in the wheel flowing. My train cars were popped onto Stampin' Dimensionals to be sure they were the main attraction, while Build-A-Brads add some 'wow' to the steam puffs.

You can't have a party without cake! Cupcakes are sassy and are easy to customize. I stamped the train engines, snipped them out, and adhered them with Glue Dots to coffee stirrers that had been cut in half. (Standard toothpicks seemed too short.) This is a great party trick, but wouldn't it be cute for an everyday surprise as well? Imagine you're little sweetie coming home from school to find a cupcake with a cute train topper. Or what about inspiration before a test -- train topped muffins for breakfast, anyone?

No party is complete without a little treat. These favors were a snap to create using my Big Shot machine and the Bag with Scallops die. For a peek at the candy, I used my Wide Oval Punch and NEW Window sheets. TIP: You'll want to punch the ovals and use Mini Glue Dots to add the window sheets before assembling the bags. On the opposite side I added a bit of track and a few train sentiments.

Lastly, a 'Choo Choo, Thank You'. This 4" square note is perfect to send out quick thank you's to guests and friends.

And speaking of gratitude: A very special 'thank you' to Mary Fish of Stampin' Pretty for featuring me as her guest stamper today.

Inspire Spring

Are the birds starting to chirp outside your window? We're in the midst of an April cold front... a rarity for Texas. Of course, 'cold' is a relative term for a Texan... there's no snow, or ice, or even scarves and mittens... you just have to put your flip-flops aside for a day or two. Regardless, I'm ready for full fledged spring and for playing outdoors. However, I had to settle for a different kind of Walk in the Park today... the designer series paper kind.

I based the layout of my card on Taylored Expressions Cupcake Sketch Challenge #61. My textured Basic Gray card base is 6" square with rounded corners. I used a sampling of Walk in the Park patterned paper for the background and various layers. My birdie friend, from Friends 24-7, was stamped in Basic Gray onto textured Whisper White card stock. The 'Inspire' sentiment is courtesy of the NEW Summer Love Rub-ons. In the corner, two layered Scallop Circles create a bloom... a NEW Basic Gray Corduroy Brad adds detail and texture to the center.

Ever wonder what goes on the inside of cards?? I chose to play off the 'Inspire' sentiment and use a few more Summer Love Rub-ons. The amount of projects you will be able to create with a few of these new coordinating products is going to astound you.... and these days it's sassy to maximize your budget.

Small and Sassy

Do you like to tuck sweet and sassy somethings into your kid's lunchboxes? What about a quick love note in the suitcase when your hubby travels, or a little treat on your guest's pillows? The theme: Small and Sassy. The perfect products: The NEW Matchbox Bigz XL Die and sweet Scallop Envelope.

The NEW Matchbox Bigz XL Die, part of the NEW Spring Occasions Mini, is going to be a go-to favorite for small treats, party favors, and quick gifts. I zipped the die through my Big Shot twice with Riding Hood Red and Pink Pirouette textured card stock. Then I added a quick strip of Bella Rose Designer Series Paper in a pleasant polka-dotty print. I layered one of the die-cut shapes (included on the Matchbox Die) with a super-sassy crocheted Fleurette. Some Bella Rose prints were added as Nugget Wraps -- ya know, accessorize the candy! ;)

A coordinating 'love note' was made by cutting a 3" x 2.2" piece of Chocolate Chip card stock. Two Bella Rose prints (remember the candies?) top my little note and a strip of ribbon hides the seam. (A favorite trick of mine.) The sentiment is from Sweet Little Sentiments, a level one Hostess Reward. It's framed perfectly with a stamp from the NEW Matchbox Messages set. The adorable stamps in this new set go hand-in-hand with the Matchbox Die but have tons of other possibilities.

TIP: On the back of my small note I added a white backing so that I could write a quick, personal note.

This little note pops right in to the Scallop Mini Envelope. I added another sentiment from the Matchbox Messages set. I can't wait to leave this as a treat for my sweet hubby... he works hard and deserves and little lovie every now and again.
